Are your window frames, door trims, and baseboards looking a little worse for wear? Over time, these small but impactful details can fade, yellow, or peel, making your home look dated and dull.

Luckily, a fresh coat of paint can instantly refresh these areas, giving your space a crisp and polished look. Whether it’s interior trim that’s been scuffed and bumped over the years or exterior frames weathered by sun and moisture, this step-by-step guide will help you achieve a long-lasting, professional finish—without hiring a pro.

But if you don’t have the time, patience, or confidence to get that perfectly smooth finish, hiring a professional might be your best bet. We’ll cover that option at the end, so keep reading!

Why Painting Trim Matters

Painting trim isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a smart investment in your home. Freshly painted doors, frames, and baseboards:

✔ Boost curb appeal and interior design—Bright, clean trim makes a home look well-maintained.
✔ Protect against moisture, wear, and tear—A proper paint job seals and protects the wood.
✔ Increase home value—Even minor touch-ups can make a big difference when selling your home.

But before you grab a brush, it’s important to prep properly so your paint sticks well and lasts.

Essential Tools and Materials for Painting Doors, Frames, Windows, and Trim

Before getting started, gather these essentials:

  • Paint – Choose semi-gloss or gloss for durability and easy cleaning.
  • Primer – A must for bare wood or dark surfaces.
  • Painter’s tape – To protect walls, glass, and floors.
  • Sandpaper – 60-80 grit for rough exterior trim, 80-120 grit for interior.
  • Angled paintbrush – Perfect for edges and corners.
  • Foam roller – Ensures a smooth, streak-free finish on flat surfaces.
  • Drop cloths – Protect floors and furniture.
  • Cleaning supplies – Mild detergent, sponge, and lint-free cloth.
  • Wood filler & putty knife – For filling nail holes and cracks.
  • Caulking gun & caulk – Seals gaps and joints for a seamless finish.
  • Ladder – If painting high frames or doors.

Step-by-Step Painting Guide

Step 1: Proper Prep Work for Long-Lasting Results

Prepping is 80% of a successful paint job. It ensures the paint adheres properly and resists chipping, peeling, or fading.

  • Clean the surface – Remove dirt, grease, and dust. For exterior trim, use a pressure washer.
  • Scrape off peeling paint – Use a hand scraper to remove old, flaky paint (especially on windowsills exposed to sun and moisture).
  • Sand the surface – Smooth out rough patches with 60-80 grit for exterior and 80-120 grit for interior surfaces.
  • Wipe away dust – Use a damp cloth or tack cloth to clean off debris.
  • Apply caulk – Use a caulking gun to seal nail holes, gaps, and joints to prevent moisture damage.
  • Tape off edges – Apply painter’s tape around glass, door hardware, and walls for clean lines.
  • Lay down drop cloths – Protect floors and surrounding areas from paint splatters.

Step 2: Applying Primer

Primer ensures that the paint adheres well and provides even coverage, especially over dark colors or bare wood.

  • Use a brush for edges and corners.
  • Switch to a foam roller for larger, flat surfaces to get a smooth, streak-free finish.
  • Allow the primer to dry completely—usually 2-4 hours, depending on the product.

Step 3: Painting Like a Pro

How to Paint Doors

  • Remove the door (optional) – Taking it off the hinges makes painting easier, but you can also tape around the hardware if keeping it in place.
  • Start with edges – Use an angled brush for precision.
  • Paint recessed areas first – For paneled doors, start with the indented sections before painting the raised areas.
  • Use a foam roller – Roll over flat areas for a streak-free finish.

How to Paint Door Frames

  • Work from top to bottom to prevent drips.
  • Use an angled brush for detailed areas.
  • Apply thin, even coats and let each layer dry before adding another.

How to Paint Window Frames

  • Tape off the glass to avoid cleanup later.
  • Use a small brush for tight spots and edges.
  • Start at the top and work your way down for the best results.

How to Paint Baseboards

  • Tape along the floor – Avoid messy splatters on your flooring.
  • Use a brush for detailed edges and a foam roller for the flat surface.

Step 4: Drying and Finishing Touches

Let everything dry completely before handling or reattaching. Most paints take 24-48 hours to cure fully.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Finish

  • Use high-gloss or semi-gloss paint – Trim should stand out and be easy to clean.
  • Apply thin coats – Thick layers lead to drips and uneven drying.
  • Sand between coats – Lightly sand with 220-grit paper for a super-smooth finish.
  • Don’t rush drying – Follow manufacturer’s drying times to avoid sticky or peeling paint.
  • Use quality brushes and rollers – Cheap tools leave streaks and shed bristles into your paint.

Step 5: Cleaning Up Paint Like a Pro

  • Seal leftover paint – Store it in as few cans as possible and label with the date and area painted.
  • Clean brushes and rollers
    • Latex paint: Wash with soap and water until the water runs clear.
    • Oil-based paint: Use paint thinner for cleanup.
  • Carefully remove tape – Score the edges with an X-Acto knife to prevent peeling paint.
  • Dispose of debris – Remove all drop cloths carefully and vacuum up any stray paint chips or dust.
  • Check for missed spots – Touch up any areas before putting everything away.

This technique is not only efficient but also helps preserve the structural integrity of the surrounding areas. Trenchless technology, similarly, offers a less invasive method for repairing or replacing underground pipes, significantly reducing the need for extensive digging and the associated costs.

Why Use a Primer?

Well, I’m going to start off by stating that the primer is very important. Despite all of the publicity involving “Paint and Primer in One” products, there are many circumstances in which a coat of primer on its own is necessary to properly prepare a surface, interior and exterior, for a paint job.  While “Paint and Primer in One” products can very well be a valid choice for formerly painted interior surfaces that are in good condition, we find that most other occurrences, especially on exterior projects, require a separate coat of primer.

Primer creates a layer that paint can better attach to.  While applying primer may seem like an extra step, since primer tends to be less expensive it leads to you actually saving time and spending less money. Primer allows the paint to last longer during the job, saving you that extra money on buying more paint. In this blog, we have listed some scenarios where the primer is most helpful.

New Drywall

New drywall is exceedingly absorbent.  It tends to soak the paint up like a sponge, causing you to use more paint than need be. With that being said, the paint often lays unevenly when it comes to bare drywall. This causes “flashing” or sometimes an uneven appearance in sheen. Don’t fret. Primer was invented for a reason. The primer will help to seal these blemishes among the service, creating a smooth finish, previous to your paint. With that being said, the primer is able to improve the overall appearance and longevity of your completely finished product.

Raw Wood

Unfinished wood should always be primed before painting. Primer, consisting of high-solids, helps fill in the wood grain and creates a soft and smooth surface for the finishing coat. Like the raw drywall, unfinished woods tend to do a good job absorbing paint, and primer aids to seal the surface to prevent this from happening. Latex primer and oil-based primer are both very suitable for raw wood, depending on the type of paint used. Keep in mind, oil-based primer is actually required for wood such as cedar and redwood, as it penetrates deeper. These landscaping ideas will give you an idea of whether you’ll need to consider primer for your backyard project.

Stains

Stains from water damage, smoke, pets, fire, etc. can be exceedingly strenuous and tough to get rid of.  They can make their way through your new coat of paint, even if you used primer previously.  The main goal here is to use a special primer designed to block stains and even odours.  Our favourite product at Hotshot Construction is KILZ Primer.

Colour Changes

For drastic colour changes, a primer is completely necessary for you to achieve your desired look for the finished product, in a reasonable amount of time. Have you ever tried to change a dark coloured wall to a lighter colour, and noticed that the dark colours continued to show through even after multiple coats? This may be because the primer wasn’t utilized. Primer helps hide the darker colour before you begin applying the lighter paint. Contrariwise, if you have ever painted dark over light, you may notice the darker paint goes on too sheer, even after plenty of coats. Primer, of course, also can aid in this situation.

In conclusion, primer is by far something we here at Hotshot highly recommend in many situations, for all of the reasons listed above. Contact us today so we can start getting you on the right track towards your dream home!

Flipping houses, home renovation TV and Home Makeovers have been a Hot Topic for over a decade but what about the office or commercial space. We tend to spend as much time at our work site as we do in our own bedrooms so shouldn’t this aesthetic be just as important? If your feeling less motivated to go to work, or feel like the office is dull and and out of date, perhaps it’s time you and you’re coworkers consider getting a professional paint job in your workplace.

Office Colours

Just like your home, your office and the colours that your team choose is certainly important. You want your office to make everyone comfortable, motivated, happy, and just create a good working environment with a positive working culture. This is why choosing the right colour for your office is of the utmost importance.

Picking An Office Colour

It’s definitely vital to consider office colours that reflect your business logo and business industry. If your business is something creative perhaps a tech company, a design business or even a dance or art studio, choosing bright colours like yellow, orange, neon green, purple, bright pink maybe something more in the proper direction for your company. Alternatively if your office is more cultured in the traditional sense such as a law firm, a doctor’s office or even a financial institution. The colours that you probably should consider are neutral colours such as cream, taupe or earthy tones. In these facilities you could even throw in a few accent walls to spruce things up, for instance take the doctor’s office; it has been documented that the colour light blue makes individuals more comfortable and at ease with their health and potentially rare instances where they may be about to undergo something scary such as a surgery or as simple as taking a needle, so having an accented light blue wall is a great idea. Or  for instance an office that has a lot of cubicles it’s been proven that even throwing an accent wall that is a variant shade of the rest of the building heightens morale due to the fact that not everything is so monotone.

Organizing Your Office Colours

There are even specialty areas in Office Buildings that should be considered to be painted a different way. Take painting a conference room or a central office space where a lot of ideas or goals and debate takes place, one wall or one area of the wall could be squared off and painted with whiteboard paint. Making this particular wall a functional piece for all meetings and office-wide messages. And if you’re not into the aesthetic of whiteboards you can consider chalkboard paint for more of a traditional sense. Hotshot Constuction gets great deals on these products and we love to pass on our savings to our clients. In fact we get deals at all Calgary paint suppliers, Sherwin Williams, Cloverdale Paints, Dulux Paints,

Trim Preparations

Now we’re going to deal with any areas in the room that need to be re-caulked and what you’ll see usually is that caulking needs to be touched up around where the baseboard meets the wall or around window trim, caulk is the best solution for sealing this gap and making everything look clean. So you’ll need to open a tube of caulking when you are opening up a tube of caulk take the tip and put it right into the spout Cutters (on the back of the caulking gun) going in about a 45-degree angle and squeeze the handles. Depending on how quickly you want to get to painting will change what caulk you want to use I prefer using fast dry paintable caulk because it’s ready in 15 minutes. After, load the caulking gun with the caulk and drag and squeeze the gun along with the seem to be sure to drag and squeeze at an even pace to avoid future problems or messes. It’s actually better for your walls to meet your baseboard at a 90-degree angle so Instead of just running your finger along it like common practice creates a burrow, I suggest you use your five in one tool and use the small square on the front of the blade (opposite of the pointy side) take your damp rag and you’ll put it in one layer over it hold it nice and tight and drag that along starting in the corner and run it along the edge of the baseboard and it creates a really nice clean square 90-degrees angle for you. This makes it easier to paint in the future as well.

Time To Sand

Once the wall repairs are completely dry, now it’s time to move on to sanding and this time you should be using 220 grit sandpaper for a really nice smooth finish perfect for paint. If there is an excessive amount, go safety first and use eye protection and respiratory mask so that you don’t breathe in any of the dust and my eyes are protected. I recommend sanding in a circular motion and that will feather out the imperfection and give you the smoothest finish, don’t be surprised if you get a little dusty. okay so your walls are spackled and sanded and now we need to do a bit more cleanup and I promise you’re almost done prepping. Grab a damp rag and you’re going to use your damp rag along your baseboards and remove some of the Spackle dust that is come down onto the baseboard then use a dry rag this is really great for the drywall dust on walls itself and make sure you check dust in corners. Finally, go around the room and remove all of my outlet and switch plate covers, it is not worth painting around, it hardly ever look clean and perfect and thinking about next time around if you ever do need to take this off you might actually ruin your paint job so it’s a very quick and easy to remove it using a flat head screwdriver. Quick tip screw the screws back in the holes without the wall plate so you don’t lose the screws then take a small piece of my painter’s tape and just cover up your outlet so that you’re sure not to get paint on those as well. in this room were not painting the ceiling but we are painting the walls in the trim and we’re going to start out with the wall this is kind of hotly debated in the painting world what do you paint first trim the walls trim walls everyone has an opinion on it and you can make a good case either way over an.

Starting To Paint

Finally were ready for paint, if your not doing your ceiling (which we recommend starting with) for your average homeowner i recommend that you start with the wall that way if you have any overspray or anything on your trim its kind of the last thing you do and it really cleans up the whole job and looks great so since your painting the walls first your next step is taping off the baseboard and trim and to do that grab 2inch painter’s tape and just start back in the corner and I’m lining line it up with the top of the trim and then peel and press your tape along the whole piece and then press a putty knife square against the tape at the very end and rip the tape there. It’s best to use one long piece this makes it so that you have a perfectly seamless Longline instead of kind of starting and stopping which creates inconsistencies. In addition to taping off your baseboard take the time for taping off all the window and door casing for the exact same reason that you don’t want to get any paint on them around these.

Well, friends, you are ready to paint your properly prepared took your time and protected all of your surfaces and prepared your walls and trim. Now its time to choose the right paint! We’ll have different articles to help you with that. Good luck with your project!

Prepping A Room Before Residential Painting Part 1

Wall Preparation

Now its time to surface Prep the walls. Probably the most common situation you will be dealing with is Drywall however I know that some of you may have plaster walls regardless, every situation is a little bit different but since drywall is going to be the most relatable and common to all of you, I’m going to assume we’re dealing with that. You’re going to have to inspect the walls for holes, cracks, dings, dents and dirt/grease. Starting with cleaning the dirt or grease, if this is not a new construction space and you’ve already had things up on the walls, dirt often gets trapped behind them, take care of it by using a spray bottle filled with warm water and about 2 tablespoons of a gentle detergent.  Failing to remove dirt or grease before painting will make it difficult for the paint to bond to the wall and will soon fail by bubbling or sagging.

Wall Repair

Now it’s time to start repairing wall imperfections, you want to go through and fill any of those holes before painting if you were to just paint it as it is you’ll not only still see the imperfections but they may be even more highlighted then before. If you have a larger hole or a deeper gash you might need to use a joint compound. There are plenty of step-by-step videos you can find online that can help with a proper technique addressing that issue or I suggest hiring a professional.

Types of damage

There are two main types of imperfections; traditional nail holes or just dings in the wall that and paint failures like loose or peeling a paint chip. I recommend a speed dry patch plus primer spackle the reason I like this is that it dries in 30 minutes and it doesn’t have a lot of shrinkages so it’s going to stay the same size and it’s super easy to work with it, really hides imperfections.  When the wall damaged area has its edges raised up and sticking out you’re going want to use the back of a putty knife or a small hammer and press the edges into the hole, basically making an indent, you want all the imperfections to be on the inside of the wall nothing raised on the outside. After that load up the corner of putty knife with spackle about half a teaspoon amount will work for your average size nail hole.  Press the putty into the wall and then smooth it out with a couple passes with your putty knife, the first pass your going to do a soft diagonal and then one perpendicular to your first pass so that you eliminate air pockets and the spackle has a lot of contact with the wall. By using quick-dry these fixes will be ready to sand and paint in 30 minutes.

The Essentials for Prepping a room before Painting

We are consistently asked how to properly prep a home so the following paint job looks immaculate, either by inquisitive do-it-yourselfers or by clients that insist they prep their homes before we arrive. I’m going to help you with how to properly prep your room to get it ready for paint. I’m a huge believer in doing it right! This means I encourage you to not gloss over parts or skip it just because it seems like it takes too much time because doing it right the first time and properly prepping can actually save you time in the long run and ensure that you’re super happy with your paint job. I’m going to talk about all the essentials and even some additional steps if you want to go the extra mile but either way, when you’re done reading this you’re going to know everything you need to do it right! prepping a room is all about two things; first preparing your room by protecting your floors, your furniture basically anything you don’t want to get paint on and second fixing your trim, your ceilings and your walls if those are the areas you’re looking to get painted.

Interior painting Room Preparation

The first thing I recommend to do is to clear all the furniture out, get the accessories out and take all things off the wall and out of the room. When you are taking pictures off the wall but you intend on putting them back into the exact same place, you want to take it off but then leave the  Nail hangers in the wall that way when You are going around the room spackling holes you don’t accidentally spackle them and then have to remeasure it and re-anchor it. whatever you can’t get out of the room, you want to still protect it. So move your furniture to the centre of the room and cover it up with plastic sheeting or plastic drop cloths.

Carpet Protection

Once the room is cleared out the next step is protecting the carpet or floors, we recommend doing so by using canvas drop cloths. If you want to go the extra mile you can put down plastic sheeting underneath your drop cloth because there is a chance that you could spill some paint and so the plastic sheeting acts as an extra precaution to protect your carpets. A recommendation for plastic sheeting would be 2 mils thickness because it is great in terms of durability so it will hold up better in terms of foot traffic anything thinner than that it tears a lot easier.  After spreading out all the plastic sheeting you should use painters tape and connect the plastic sheet up onto the baseboard just a couple inches. This is going to be really easy to remove when completed but for now, adding a few pieces of tape connecting the plastic sheeting to the wall will hold the plastic sheeting in place when we’re putting our canvas drop cloths down.

Types Of Canvas Drop Cloths

There are two types of canvas drop cloths one is an “area” drop cloth which is a big rectangle square and the other is “Runner” drop cloth and those are like a long and thin rug. you should start with larger drop cloths and then use the runners to fill in any gaps that you need. If your drop cloth is wider than the width of your room you should do two things, first get rid of as many wrinkles as possible, if you have bumps in your drop cloth it males it really easy to trip on it and the last thing you want to do is trip with paint in your hands.  Secondly, pull all access to one side so you only have to make one fold of your cloth. When you’re holding like this you just remember you want to make sure you’re folding towards you so when the cleanup time comes if you do have some stray drops of paint they’re not ending up on your carpet.

Eggshell Vs Satin

If you’re considering on painting the interior of your house in the near future or fixing and sprucing up a particular piece of furniture, it is best to know not only the colour you are looking to have as well as the base (oil or latex) paint but also the best Sheen for the project. It is important to note that there are many different types of sheens for paint; it comes in high gloss, semi-gloss, satin, velvet, eggshell, and flat in order of highest to the lowest light reflectiveness. The amount of a Sheen is determined by the amount of light reflected from the surface often referred to as a shiny or glossy finish.

This particular article we will be looking at the difference between eggshell and satin paint because these are two very popular interior paint sheen choices. Both happened to be just shiny enough to make the interior project pop while not being too glossy. These two Sheen types can be used on a multiple ranges of surfaces, but keep in mind they have a difference that makes them more suitable for unique applications. Now let’s determine which is best for your next interior renovation project.

Where to use eggshell paint

Eggshell paint is the less reflective of the two options which makes it an ideal choice for interior walls that will not see a lot of wear and tear. Particular rooms to be painted in the eggshell sheen would be best-suited rooms like the master bedroom, a dining room or particularly a home office. A good thing to know about eggshell paint is that it conceals a lot of surface flaws. Although satin paint can often fend off dents and scuffs and scratches much better than eggshell if your walls already have the surface problems eggshell will conceal them a lot more efficiently. This is due to the fact that with more reflective light against wall imperfections, these particular problems are emphasized and highlighted in the wall making even the smallest imperfections much more glaring. Another bonus in choosing eggshell over satin is that is a few dollars cheaper per gallon.

In the instance that you don’t hire a professional, eggshell paint makes it easier to minimize mistakes made by the applicator. For instance, whether your brush ran thin or you let one section of the wall dry before rolling the rest, eggshell minimizes these notable mistakes. This also means that doing a touch up with eggshell paint on an eggshell wall can potentially save you from having to do the whole wall over again. It is thanks to the lower Sheen that these mistakes are easy to hide and minimizes others from noticing these application mistakes. Eggshell paint is also a fantastic option for rental units and is exactly why property management companies love them. For example, when we work with our friends at S&T Vacation Rental Management, we always apply paints with eggshell finish for turnovers. This makes it quick an easy to fix and cover up any damages that the previous tenant might have made on the walls.

Where to use satin paint

Third, from the top in regards to most shein, satin paint is still quite reflective. It is often used in areas that are high traffic such as; kitchens, entryways, full bathrooms, kid bedrooms, and living rooms. It is ideal for high moisture areas such as bathrooms because in these particular areas they often get wet and are often wiped down or they show condensation marks. This moisture makes these rooms very easily prone to mildew, so be sure that your particular satin paint product has an anti-mildew additive. It is important to note that if you were considering painting a table and chairs using satin finish would be preferred for the fact that these pieces are often moved, or hold items that can be dragged across all the while being easier to clean.

Benefits Of Satin

Certain benefits that satin provides is that adds a lot more depth to small spaces due to it being glossier. Satin sharpens The Contours of a wall making it appear larger adding depth to certain places like hallways or a small room. One of the biggest benefits of a satin finish is that it is very durable since it is formulated with less pigment and more binders making it more flexible, tough and harder to break down. So if there is an area where you will very likely hit scratch or rub against the wall it is highly recommended that you choose Satin for these areas. In comparison, eggshell will show a lot more abrasions and impact points if you were to choose it for that same area. Another big benefit to choosing Satin is that it is much easier to clean it does not hold dirt as well as eggshell. And in comparison If you’re trying to clean eggshell walls that have grease marks or scuffs, you will be required to use a lot more elbow grease to remove these. Making satin a better pick for anywhere that can get very dirty, such as children’s rooms for entryways or playrooms that can collect muddy handprints or food smudges. you will notice that Satin is very close in comparison to velvet with sheen levels. When we are comparing the two (eggshell and Satin) you will notice eggshell reflects very little light and has negligible lustre vs the light shine that eggshell finish has.

Hiring The Right Paint Professional

It is important to know that a lot of prep on concealing these wall imperfections must be done before applying a satin finish. If this is the case for your particular case, we would recommend that you try to get help from a local professional painting company. We also know that making the choice of paint colour and paint sheen may be difficult but we hope that choosing the right professional painters doesn’t have to be. Flipping houses, home renovation TV and Home Makeovers have been a Hot Topic for over a decade but what about the office or commercial space. We tend to spend as much time at our work site as we do in our own bedrooms so shouldn’t this aesthetic be just as important? If your feeling less motivated to go to work, or feel like the office is dull and out of date, perhaps it’s time you and you’re coworkers consider getting a professional paint job in your workplace.

Office Colours:

Just like your home, your office and the colours that your team choose is certainly important. You want your office to make everyone comfortable, motivated, happy, and just create a good working environment with a positive working culture. This is why choosing the right colour for your office is of the utmost importance.

Picking An Office Colour:

Or for instance, an office that has a lot of cubicles it’s been proven that even throwing an accent wall that is a variant shade of the rest of the building heightens morale due to the fact that not everything is so monotone.

Organizing Your Office Colours:

There are even specialty areas in Office Buildings that should be considered to be painted a different way. Take painting a conference room or a central office space where a lot of ideas or goals and debate takes place, one wall or one area of the wall could be squared off and painted with whiteboard paint. Making this particular wall a functional piece for all meetings and office-wide messages. And if you’re not into the aesthetic of whiteboards you can consider chalkboard paint for more of a traditional sense. Hotshot Construction gets great deals on these products and we love to pass on our savings to our clients. In fact we get deals at all Calgary paint suppliers, Sherwin Williams, Cloverdale Paints, Dulux Paints, Benjamin Moore, and of course Home Depot and Lowes if the project is involving more construction work like drywall and baseboard and trim installation.

Your Next Step:

Taking all this into consideration, it is best to do your research to find the right local painting professionals for your job. Also, feel free to consider Hotshot Construction for all your Calgary interior painting or commercial painting. We will gladly help assist you in choosing the correct products for the room lighting, size and office traffic. Along with providing popular colours in the modern era. Top Interior and Exterior Colours for 2019

Every year the top paint manufacturing companies come out with their favourite colours of the year, and us at Hotshot Construction always take note for both the interior painting trends and the exterior painting trends. But this year we thought we would collect all of them in one place and release them to our clients and future clients for Calgary painting. Familiarity with the painting trends is especially helpful if you’re in the marketing and looking to buy or sell a home. If you’re looking to list some property, then the right interior and exterior colours will help you fetch a higher price. Likewise if you’re buying, any outdated colours can be used in your negotiations to bring the price down.

Kicking off our list is Dulux Paints, the PPG paint brand:

Dulux Paint 2019 Colour of the Year

Night Watch

Night Watch (DLX1145-7) is a versatile, deep green derived from last year’s black trend, giving a nod to nature with an underlying urban sophistication.

Person opinion if you’re wondering what paint colour will be trending in interiors in 2019, Hotshot Construction would argue its: Dulux paints – Night Watch!

According to PPG Paints, and their 2019 colour of the year Night Watch is a deep hunter green that’s influenced by the forest. Dee Schlotter, the PPG senior color marketing manager describes it as “Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through colour,” “The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”

We would like to note that the versatile shade would work best for features. PPG suggests using Night Watch for an accent wall in a dining area or bedroom, even pairing the shade with a gold-hued to create a elegant accent.

Not to be outdone on just the interior painting side, we have a great example of Night Watch for exterior painting.

“Night Watch is both decadent as a feature colour and versatile as a neutral when paired with an accent wall of Mojito Shimmer.“

“A front door and shutters painted in Night Watch makes a classic statement against brick or stucco, set off with metallic hardware and finishing touches.”

Regardless of interior or exterior if you’re lacking a good view or connection to the outdoors, the luxurious green shade is ideal for you.

Cavern Clay

Moving on to Sherwin Williams who has been around paint trends for over 150 years, we’ve trusted them to find the perfect shade for a lot of rooms in our homes. So Hotshot Construction looks forward to everytime they make their yearly announcement for interior painting.  This being the ninth year that Sherwin-Williams has made an official selection for color of the year. And this year they picked Cavern Clay SW 7701 as its 2019 Color of the Year!

Metropolitan

Benjamin Moore, North America’s most popular paint supplier and colour and coatings brand. They hosted an exclusive event held at The Grill & The Pool at the Seagram Building in New York on Montvale, NJ – October 11, 2018 to top leading interior designers, architects, painting contractors and influencers. In honour of its highly anticipated Colour of the Year for 2019 – and they brought us Metropolitan AF-690, a styling grey with smooth undertones.

When quoted about The Benjamin Moore Colour of the Year 2019 Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore Director of Strategic Design Intelligence described it as

“Comforting, composed and effortlessly sophisticated, Metropolitan AF-690 exudes beauty and balance,” “It’s a colour in the neutral spectrum that references a contemplative state of mind and design. Not arresting nor aggressive, this understated yet glamorous grey creates a soothing, impactful common ground.”

Into The Stratosphere

Immersed in this captivating dark blue we can imagine a journey into deep seas and endless night skies. Uplifting yet mysterious, and eternally elegant, this midnight hue is sure to transform any space into something extraordinary.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any fantastic examples of this colour being used just yet. Just a fact from it being quite on the new. However, you can certainly expect to start seeing it pop up more in featured designs of the new builds and any renovations and refreshes being done this year for 2019.

It seems 2019 is moving in a more earthful and naturally lively when developing these new shades. From powerful deep greens to the soft cavern clay of Sherwin Williams, companies are connecting the dots between digital engagement, mental demands and consumers’ home lives, which inspired many of the color picks this year.

Hotshot would like to remind our readers that if your looking to get a head start on current trends these would be the best place to start for a refreshing home look.  As always anymore inquiries or questions always feel free to call or message us, we’d be happy to help!
